Prostate health can be negatively affected in the summer
Consuming alcohol or spicy and fatty foods
Saturated cholesterol worsens the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Drinking at least a liter and a half of water a day is essential for having
good prostate health
Although summer is a time that we all like, it relaxes us and makes us "recharge our batteries", we must be careful because it can mask a prostate problem.
In summer it's hot, we sweat more, and we urinate less. These three characteristics cause prostate patients to experience some improvement in their symptoms, feel better, and decide to suspend their treatment for a few days. Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha He advises that before making this decision we should ask the urologist because, "if the symptoms are mild we may be able to take a break but if our prostate problem needs to be controlled, stopping the medication may, in the long run, be more harmful."
The absence of cold weather and rain also significantly improves the symptoms of urinary urgency. Men with prostate problems are very prone to bladder spasms in response to external stimuli such as low temperatures or the sound of running water. “In this sense,” comments Gómez Sancha, “we can find in the summer months an ally that will help us better manage our urinary urgency.”
But be careful with activities associated with this time of year, such as drinking more, eating at irregular hours and in excess, or consuming exotic or spicy foods. Dr. Gómez Sancha explains that “drinking excessively, especially at dinner, can trigger urinary retention in patients predisposed to it. Furthermore, spicy foods can worsen urinary symptoms.”
The Institute of Advanced Urological Surgery (ICUA) gives us some tips to avoid worsening symptoms associated with prostate problems in the summer:
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid alcohol, especially after dinner
- Avoid stimulating drinks such as coffee or cola-rich beverages
- Distribute fluid intake throughout the day and avoid excessive intake at one time.
- Avoid drinking large amounts of fluids late in the day
- Drinking green tea as an alternative for hydration
- During long days at the beach, position yourself near a bathroom.
