Growth of a benign tumor in the prostate gland as a result of aging. It produces urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, weak stream, frequency, urgency, needing to get up to urinate at night, or incontinence.
Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha
Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha is one of the world's most experienced surgeons in Holmium Laser Endoscopic Prostate Therapy (HoLEP) and robotic surgery for prostate cancer and other urinary tract tumors. He has performed over 10.000 procedures and trained more than 600 urologists from over 50 countries in this surgery: when other surgeons want to master this operation, they come to learn it from him.
He specialized in urology at the Hospital de La Princesa in Madrid. He later worked at the London Institute of Urology, where he subspecialized in reconstructive urology and the treatment of urethral strictures.
Upon returning to Madrid, he founded the Institute of Advanced Urological Surgery (ICUA) and was a pioneer in the introduction and development in Spain of minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (green laser and Holmium laser prostatectomy) and prostate cancer.
He described the GreenLEP technique (green laser enucleation of the prostate), which allows for the operation of prostates of any size and is currently used in numerous hospitals in Europe and America. He later developed the HoLEP en bloc technique with early apical release, which has minimized the risk of urinary incontinence after the procedure and is now an international standard, published in World Journal of UrologyHe is the author of the first reference manual on this surgery, the Manual of Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate., available in Spanish and English.

Since 2007, he has directed an international training program, with a center of excellence at the Hill Clinic in Bulgaria, which has hosted urologists from dozens of countries. He also performs live surgeries before thousands of specialists at major international urology congresses (AUA, EAU, WCE). He has operated in hospitals and at congresses on all five continents.
Since 2006, he has collaborated closely with Dr. Richard Gastón in the laparoscopic and robotic treatment of patients with prostate cancer and other urological tumors. After training in robotic surgery in Belgium and Strasbourg, he is Head of the Urology Department and Director of the Robotic Surgery Program at ICUA-Clínica CEMTRO in Madrid. He was the first surgeon to perform a robotic HoLEP in Europe and is a scientific advisor to Andromeda Surgical.
In 2025 he received the Innovation and Excellence in Urology Award from the Andalusian Association of Urology.
