He began his career as a urologist at the Saint Augustine Clinic in Bordeaux in 1988, a role he combined with his work as an oncologist at the Cancer Center. In 1991, he was appointed Head of the Urology Department at the Saint Augustine Clinic.
He stands out worldwide for his great commitment to and development of the laparoscopic technique in the 90s. In Bordeaux, at that same time, he came into contact with this practice and quickly understood the many advantages of minimally invasive techniques in the field of urological oncology.
His desire to improve the technique led him to publish his first articles and experiences in the middle of that same decade, and it was then, in 1997, that he laid the foundations for radical prostatectomy. In doing so, he became the first surgeon in the world to develop and teach that prostatectomy could be performed using laparoscopic surgery.
His growing vocation and interest in this novel technique led him to subsequently develop the concept of laparoscopic cystectomy, carrying out the first operation in Bordeaux in 1998.
Since then, these techniques have developed enormously with the contribution of robotics in the field of medicine and in his own experience through their incorporation into his unit at the San Agustín Clinic in 2002.
Currently, Dr. Richard Gaston is the most experienced surgeon in the world in the robotic radical prostatectomy technique, with more than 500 procedures performed.
