Dr. Rafael Medina
A urologist with extensive experience at the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, where he has focused his practice on urological tumors, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, and highly complex surgery. He was a pioneer of robotic surgery in Andalusia, beginning his work with this technology in 2007 and overseeing its implementation in various urology departments throughout Spain. He provides comprehensive care for all urological pathologies, with a holistic and integrated approach to cancer patients and extensive experience in kidney transplantation.
Current specialization
He specializes in the diagnosis and medical-surgical treatment of prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer, as well as in robotic and highly complex surgery. He has participated in the development of clinical protocols for conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and urinary tract infections. He has extensive experience in kidney transplantation and is known for his ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams focused on providing the best possible care to urological cancer patients.
Academic activities and membership in organizations
He holds a Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Seville (summa cum laude by unanimous vote), with a doctoral thesis focused on urinary lithiasis. He completed his training with a Master's degree in Urological Tumors from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery (Urology Area) at the University of Seville, a member of the Academic Committee of the Master's Program in Transplantation, and a professor in the Master's Program in Care for Patients on Renal Replacement Therapy. He has supervised 12 doctoral theses and is a member of the National Commission for the Specialty of Urology of the Ministry of Health.
Scientific activity
He coordinates the IBiS Research Group “Advanced Surgery in Urology. Urological Therapies” and directs the Research Institute for Urology of the FIU–Spanish Association of Urology. He is deputy editor of the journal Actas Urológicas Españolas and a member of the editorial board of Archivos Españoles de Urología. Author of more than 100 scientific articles and a frequent speaker at national and international conferences, he combines his research activity with extensive teaching focused on training new generations of specialists.
