Dr. Javier Amores Bermúdez

An expert in minimally invasive surgery and uro-oncology, Dr. Amores specializes in percutaneous and endoscopic surgery for kidney stones, as well as laparoscopy of the kidney, prostate, and bladder. He also treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP).

She graduated in Medicine from the Cadiz University (2004-2010) and then completed his specialization in Urology at the Puerta del Mar University Hospital from Cádiz (2011-2016). He holds research qualifications and is currently working on his doctoral thesis on kidney cancer. Since 2019, he has been a professor of Urology in the Medicine Degree program at the Cadiz University.

She combines her work in ICUA Andalusia with the position of Specialist Physician in Urology in the University Hospital of Jerez de la Frontera (2016), where I am responsible for the kidney cancer consultation and co-responsible for the advanced prostate cancer and kidney stones consultation.

Current specialization

Dr. Amores's area of expertise is Minimally Invasive Surgery and Uro-Oncology, specializing in percutaneous and endoscopic surgery for kidney stones, and laparoscopy of the kidney, prostate, and bladder. He has also specialized in Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia. He was one of the pioneering specialists in performing fusion prostate biopsies in the province of Cádiz, a skill he has been able to develop thanks to his residencies and training at leading centers of excellence. One example is the Hill Clinic in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he mastered Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) under Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha.

Academic activities and membership in organizations

He teaches in several master's programs at various Spanish universities. He is currently the tutor for residents specializing in Urology and Family Medicine in the Jerez, Costa Noroeste, and Sierra de Cádiz Health Area.

In addition, he participates as a laparoscopy instructor at the prestigious “Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión Jesús Usón” in Cáceres and at the “IAVANTE” center in Granada belonging to the Ministry of Health.

With a clear dedication to patient care, another pillar of Dr. Amores' career is scientific research. He has published numerous national and international works and has participated in many national conferences as a speaker in the field of uro-oncology. In 2019, he received the award for best oral presentation at the 34th National Congress of Urologic Oncology held in Madrid. He has also received an award at the 12th Congress of the Spanish Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery held in Chiclana (2014).

He has completed several master's degrees, most notably in "Comprehensive Medical and Surgical Management of Localized, Advanced, and Metastatic Renal Cancer" (2018) and "Advanced Prostate Cancer" (2017) from the University of Salamanca. He also holds a certificate in "Urological Ultrasound" from the University of Zaragoza (2014). Finally, his extensive curriculum vitae includes his work as a sub-investigator and principal investigator in major clinical trials on advanced prostate cancer (SPARTAN, ARAMIS, TITAN, PROTEUS, Identificar, etc.).

Diseases it treats

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

Growth of a benign tumor in the prostate gland as a result of aging. It produces urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, weak stream, frequency, urgency, needing to get up to urinate at night, or incontinence.

Prostate Cancer

It is the most common cancer in men, and it is curable if detected early. It is important to see a urologist annually starting at age 50 for early detection, and at age 40 if there is a family history.

Bladder Cancer

Very common in patients who smoke or who smoked in their youth, it usually presents with blood in the urine and irritative urinary symptoms. 80% of cases are curable.

Kidney Stones

The crystallization of waste products in urine can produce kidney stones. These stones can vary in composition and their elimination may occur naturally or require surgical treatment.

Phimosis

Narrowing of the foreskin that prevents the glans from being exposed. This can compromise hygiene and cause discomfort during sexual intercourse. It is common in children but sometimes bothers older men as well.

Techniques in which he specializes

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP)

Intervention that allows the removal of benign prostatic hyperplasia with laser by vaporizing the hyperplastic tissue or by allowing the enucleation of all the tissue and subsequently extracting it in small fragments.

Flowmetry

This test measures the amount of urine the patient's bladder is able to urinate per second, the duration of urination, and any possible interruptions during urination.

Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopy is a type of minimally invasive surgery in which the patient is operated on through small incisions made in the abdominal cavity.

urological ultrasound

It allows visualization of the body's interior without the use of radiation, thanks to the use of ultrasound. It can be used to view the kidneys, adrenal glands, parts of the ureters, bladder, prostate, testicles, urethra, and penis.

4K Cystoscopy

It is a diagnostic procedure that allows visualization of the urethra and bladder using a high-resolution cystoscope (a thin tube connected to a camera). It allows the urologist to identify suspicious lesions.

Varicocelectomy

This procedure involves ligating testicular varicosities, or varicoceles, through a small incision in the groin. It is usually performed in cases where the patient experiences testicular pain or decreased fertility.

Hydrocelectomy

Surgical intervention that resolves the excessive accumulation of fluid around the testicle (hydrocele).

Condyloma removal surgery

Genital warts can be removed with an electric scalpel using local anesthesia, by using liquid nitrogen, which destroys them by freezing (cryotherapy), or by using laser light.

Ureteral catheter or stent

It is a tubular catheter, which is inserted into the ureter, connecting the bladder and kidney, to allow urine to flow down to the bladder.

Ureteral stone surgery

Today, painful kidney stones can be treated with a simple procedure. A very thin instrument is inserted through the urethra, allowing the stones to be pulverized with a laser.

Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS)

A minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that allows a very narrow and flexible instrument, which carries a camera, to be inserted through the urethra and up to the kidney, allowing kidney stones to be pulverized and extracted.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy

Minimally invasive treatment of large kidney stones, through a puncture a camera and a laser are introduced into the kidney to pulverize the urinary stones.

Laparoscopic and robotic pyeloplasty

Laparoscopic or robotic pyeloplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to treat strictures at the junction between the renal pelvis and the ureter. The procedure reconstructs this junction to allow urine to flow…

Urethral reconstruction, urethroplasty

A surgical procedure to permanently repair a urethral stricture (narrowing of the urethral canal). Thanks to technological advancements, it now has a high long-term success rate.
