Dr. Argüelles is the coordinator of the Lithiasis and Endoscopy Unit at the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, where he leads the comprehensive approach to lithiasis and endoscopic pathology of the urinary tract.
Dr. Enrique Argüelles

Attending Urologist at Virgen del Rocío University Hospital since 2005, with extensive experience in the treatment of urinary stones, bladder and upper urinary tract tumors, as well as benign prostatic hyperplasia. He practices with a highly specialized approach, focusing on minimally invasive and highly precise techniques, and coordinates the hospital's Lithiasis and Endoscopy team. He is also a member of the center's kidney transplant team.
Current specialization
He coordinates the Lithiasis and Endoscopy team, where metabolic disorders responsible for urinary stone formation are diagnosed and treated using advanced techniques such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy, retrograde intrarenal surgery, and ureteroscopy. He also performs endoscopic surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia using laser enucleation and endoscopically treats tumors of the upper urinary tract and bladder.
Academic activities and membership in organizations
A graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cádiz, he completed his residency in Urology at the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital. He holds a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Seville (summa cum laude by unanimous decision), with a doctoral thesis focused on predictive models of urinary stone composition and fragmentation using extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. He has held the Expert Level Quality Accreditation awarded by the Andalusian Health Quality Agency since 2009. He has served as a clinical tutor for medical students, a tutor for Urology residents, and a professor in Endourology and Retrograde Intrarenal Endoscopic Surgery courses at the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Center (Cáceres).
Scientific activity
Author of 25 book chapters and 39 articles in national and international journals, with more than 80 scientific communications presented at conferences. He was part of the European COST Action CA16217 project “European network of multidisciplinary research to improve the urinary stents” (ENIUS) and collaborates as a reviewer in numerous scientific journals, having received the Best Reviewer Award from Archivos Españoles de Urología in 2014. He has participated as a member of the jury for the E. Pérez Castro Award and has coordinated scientific sessions in his unit.
