Dr. Fernando Gómez Sancha

El Dr. Gómez Sancha He is an international expert in Holmium laser enucleation for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and in robotic surgery for prostate cancer and other tumors of the urinary tract.

He specialized in urology at the Hospital de La Princesa in Madrid. He later worked at the London Institute of Urology, where he subspecialized in reconstructive urology and the treatment of urethral strictures.

Upon returning to Madrid, he founded the Institute of Advanced Urological Surgery and was a pioneer in the introduction and development of minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (green laser prostatectomy and Holmium laser) and prostate cancer (cryosurgery and high-intensity focused ultrasound – HIFU).

He described a new surgical technique, GreenLEP (green laser enucleation of the prostate), which allows for the operation of prostates of any size and is currently used in many European and American hospitals. He later described the HoLEP en bloc technique with early apical release, which has minimized the risk of urinary incontinence associated with this procedure, earning him international recognition. He has performed surgeries in hospitals and at conferences on all five continents.

For many years he has trained other urologists in hospitals around the world in these techniques, as reflected in his blog.

Since 2006, he has collaborated closely with Dr. Richard Gastón in the laparoscopic and robotic treatment of patients with prostate cancer and other urological tumors. After training in robotic surgery in Belgium and Strasbourg, he is currently Head of the Urology Department and Director of the Robotic Surgery Program at ICUA-Clínica CEMTRO in Madrid.

Diseases it treats

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

Growth of a benign tumor in the prostate gland as a result of aging. It produces urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, weak stream, frequency, urgency, needing to get up to urinate at night, or incontinence.

Prostate Cancer

It is the most common cancer in men, and it is curable if detected early. It is important to see a urologist annually starting at age 50 for early detection, and at age 40 if there is a family history.

Bladder Cancer

Very common in patients who smoke or who smoked in their youth, it usually presents with blood in the urine and irritative urinary symptoms. 80% of cases are curable.

Kidney Cancer

It's a tumor that initially causes few symptoms; the kidney is surrounded by a layer of fat that allows it to grow without causing any problems. Nowadays, it's detected during routine imaging studies (ultrasound, CT scan, MRI).

Techniques in which he specializes

Robotic surgery

The Da Vinci Robot allows surgery through small holes in the abdominal wall, increasing the surgeon's precision and ability to perform procedures with great delicacy.

Urethral reconstruction, urethroplasty

A surgical procedure to permanently repair a urethral stricture (narrowing of the urethral canal). Thanks to technological advancements, it now has a high long-term success rate.

Treatment of pelvic organ prolapse

If lifestyle changes and pelvic physiotherapy do not correct the problem, minimally invasive surgeries can be performed to reposition the pelvic organs and correct prolapses.

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP)

Intervention that allows the removal of benign prostatic hyperplasia with laser by vaporizing the hyperplastic tissue or by allowing the enucleation of all the tissue and subsequently extracting it in small fragments.
