A review in which our colleague participated, the Dr. Juan Gómez Rivas, analyzes how to improve early detection of prostate cancer without falling into overdiagnosis or unnecessary treatments. The work focuses on the PRAISE-U project, a European initiative that seeks to lay the foundations for a more effective screening program.
Despite technological advances, early detection of prostate cancer remains controversial due to the lack of organized screening programs. Therefore, experts are opening a debate on how to balance the benefits of early diagnosis with the risks of overdiagnosis and overtreatment.
This review, based on scientific literature, institutional reports, and technical documentation from the PRAISE-U project, describes in detail the design and implementation of this innovative screening model. Following the European Union's recommendation in 2022, PRAISE-U proposes an individual risk-based approach that combines prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and clinical risk calculators.
The part of the program developed in Spain has shown promising results. In both Galicia and Manresa, the use of digital tools and the implementation of a model coordinated by primary care have improved the screening process and helped reduce unnecessary interventions.
The findings of the review, in which our colleague participated, show that PRAISE-U offers an innovative and adaptable framework for prostate cancer screening in Europe. The Spanish experience, for its part, demonstrates that it is possible to implement effective, risk-based early detection programs, provided there is sound planning, technological support, and genuine collaboration between the different levels of care.
